Secretary’s Report for the Period of November 2011 to December 2013

The Secretary takes pleasure in presenting the report of the Institute for the period of November 2011 to December 2013. The present Executive Council (EC) was elected in the XXVI General Body (GB) Meeting held on 15th December 2010 at CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur during the XI International Seminar on Mineral Processing Technology (MPT-2010).

During this period, the Institute has made an all round progress. As decided by the Executive Council in its meeting in February 2013, the XIII International Seminar on Mineral Processing Technology i.e. MPT-2013 is being jointly organised by IIME and CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar during December 10-12, 2013. The event has evoked an excellent response and more than 300 abstracts of paper have been received and about 800 delegates including many foreign delegates are expected to participate in this seminar. The seminar is blessed with the messages from a number of dignitaries. The Institute would like to place on record the appreciation for sincere efforts made by the Organising Committee led by Prof. B.K. Mishra, Director, CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar.

As you know IMPC is known as the Olympics of Mineral Engineering. IIME alongwith IIM successfully organised the XXVI International Mineral Processing Congress (IMPC-2012) during September 24-28, 2012 at Hotel Ashok, New Delhi. More than 1100 delegates from 42 countries participated in this prestigious event. Total 517 papers were presented in oral, poster and plenary sessions. This was for first time that IMPC was held in India. Report on IMPC-2012 in uploaded to IIME website for reference of the members. The Institute appreciated the enormous efforts put in by Dr. Pradip, Prof. B.K. Mishra, Executive Council Members and the members of the Organising Committee towards successful completion of this mega event.

As you know IIME had total five local chapters at Bhubneswar, Chennai, Dhanbad, Jamshedpur, Nagpur and Pune-Mumbai and two student chapters viz. Dhanbad and Garividi. Subsequently, another two chapters namely, Udaipur Chapter and Keonjhar Student Chapter have been opened during this period. All the chapters are professionally active and vibrant.

Bhubaneswar Chapter organised three short term courses on Emerging Technology Trends, Plant design and Issues related to bauxite during this period. Udaipur Chapter organised one day workshop on plant practices in sulphide ore beneficiation. Jamshedpur chapter conducted workshop on iron ore pelletization and lectures on relevant topics. Pune-Mumbai chapter organised workshop on bauxite beneficiation and waste recycling. Chennai, Dhanbad and Nagpur chapters have also been active and organised technical lectures on varied topics.

The Institute congratulates to all the office bearers of the local chapters and members for various activities organised by them and thank them for their co-operation. The chapters are encouraged for organising technical events for the benefit of the members.

During this period many new members have been enrolled. The current member strength is about 1800. We heartily welcome all the new members. We also request to all the members to keep us informed about change of their addresses. As desired by EC, hard copy of the Membership Directory has been brought out for easy reference of the members.

We have observed that some of the members have changed to life member while there are several annual members who have not paid their annual subscription. Such members are requested either to change to life membership or update their subscription.

The Executive Council had meetings to discuss various issues related to the activities of IIME. Few important decisions taken by the EC are cited below:

  • Like other series of internal conference IIMPC, IMPS etc., MPT will be organised biennial. That last MPT (MPT-2011) was held in Udaipur, the current is MPT 2013 and the could be held on in 2015. Between the two MPTs, the IIME local chapters can organise short term courses/workshops/seminars considering the interest of local industries/members. This arrangement is considered suitable also in view of the organisation of a number of seminars and the constraints in raising fund for MPT every year. However, an ATM followed by GB will be organised every year with involvement of Local chapters in rotation.
  • Resuming publication (soft copy) of IIME Abstract service.
  • Opening of new chapters for expanding the activities of IIME.
  • Approval to opening of new chapter(s).
  • Maintaining a status quo so far as the changes in byelaws is concerned. Further no major change in membership structure, however, IIME may offer/elect Fellow Member based on the suggested criteria with respect to experience/contribution.

This year it was decided to honour persons of eminence who were instrumental in establishing and guiding Mineral Processing at different places and are well known for their outstanding contributions in the field of Mineral Engineering. We are happy to announce that we would be felicitating the following personalities:

  • Mr. N.D. Rao, Managing Director, BRPL Ltd., Bhubaneswar
  • Dr. Meda Venkataiah, Executive Director, MSPL Ltd.,Hospet
  • Mr. P.S.R. Reddy, Chief Scientist, CSIR-IMMT, Bhubneswar

Nominations were invited for different categories of IIME Awards and submitted to the members of Award committee for evaluation. As recommended by the Award Committee it is a pleasure for us to announce this years prestigious awards of IIME as follows:

IIME Mineral Beneficiation Award - R&D/ Academic :
Dr. Ratnakar Singh, CSIR-NML, Jamshedpur

IIME Mineral Beneficiation Award - Industrial Practice :
Dr. A. Bandyopadhyay, CDE Asia Ltd., Kolkata

IIME Awards for Best Paper Published
Every year IIME Awards certificate and cash prize of Rs. One thousand only each for the best papers published in the areas of Characterisation, Beneficiation, Electro-Hydro-bioprocessing (Misra award) and Environmental Issues related to Mineral processing (Tamotia Award). This year the expert panel recommended the following papers for IIME best paper Published Awards.

Mineral Beneficiation:

  • Modeling and optimisation of spiral concentrator for separation of ultimate chromite authored by Sunil Kumar Tripathy and Y. Rama Murthy, published in Powder Technology, 221, 2012, pp. 387-394
  • Application of artificial neural network to study the performance of jig for beneficiation of non-coking coal authored by Lopamudra Panda, A. K. Sahoo, A. Tripathy, S. K. Biswal and A. K. Sahu, published in Fuel, 97, 2012, pp.151-156

Electro-/Hydro-Bio-processing :

  • Insights into heap bioleaching of low grade chalcopyrite ores: A pilot scale study authored by S. Panda, K. Sanjay, L. B. Sukla, N. Pradhan, T. Subbaiah, B. K. Mishra, M. S. R. Prasad and S. K. Ray, published in Hydrometallurgy, 2012, pp. 157-165.
Due to poor response, awards under other categories have not been recommend by the Committee. Members and authors are requested to submit their papers for consideration of IIME best paper awards on the above four categories.

On behalf of the Institute we sincerely thank the members of Award Committee and heartily congratulate all the awardees.

The account for the year 2012-13 was settled and audited. It is to be noted that during this period by effort of every one good asset has been created. The audited statement of account of the Institute will be presented by the Treasurer, IIME.

Every year income tax return is to be filed with Income tax Department. It is to be mentioned that inspite of our repeated requests we are not getting audited statement of account from all the chapters. Once again Chapters are requested to submit the chapters account every year by 30th April to take up filing of income tax return and to avoid unnecessary complications.

The Secretary likes to express his sincere thanks to the President, EC members and other office bearers and the members for their active support, help and guidance, Thank you.

Hony. Secretary, IIME
